Morning Session

The Ethics of OOPS! Slips, Mistakes, Failures and Your Future:

Everybody says, “We learn more from failure than success.” But most of us would still prefer the latter to the former. Because few seek failure, we’re tempted to avoid it at all costs — and that’s often where the ethical issues arise. How we deal with failure, in ourselves and others, can have wide-ranging behavioral, cultural and ethical impact — for better or for worse.

Greg Conderacci, who teaches this course, is no stranger to failure. Because “bad news is good news,” he covered major corporate and government failures as a former reporter for The Wall Street Journal. And, like all of us, he’s made many blunders himself. In both for-profit and non-profit leadership roles, he’s watched seeming success turn to failure — and vice versa. A BLI Senior Fellow, consultant, and faculty member at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, he is a sought-after adviser for personal and corporate turnarounds.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

Upon completion of this course participants will focus on failure – personal and professional – to help them:

  • Recognize their own failures positively<?xml:namespace prefix="o" />
  • Manage failure constructively on the job
  • Coach others through failure to success

MAJOR TOPICS

  • Good failure: How to encourage it and harness its power
  • Bad failure: When it’s NOT okay to fail
  • Ugly failure: How to forgive it and move on
  • Fast failure: Can be better than “quick wins”
  • Slow failure: The cancer nobody notices

Afternoon Session

Extraordinary Endurance: Leadership Lessons from the Long Road

When the prospects are daunting, the pain is immediate and the goal far away, endurance can be the most valuable leadership quality. If you’re confronting a challenge and wondering “How will I ever get through this?”, then this course is designed for you. Taught by two instructors who have crossed the country (one on foot and one on a bicycle), the course taps both their experience and their research into energy, endurance, leadership — and tackling tough tasks.

Greg Conderacci is one of BLI’s most popular instructors.  Greg, an ultra-distance bike racer, rode from Seattle to Williamsburg, VA and raised money for his favorite charity along the way. He has many years of experience in leading teams through difficult times.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

  • Learn how to manage your energy, boost your morale (and your team’s) and keep on keeping on. Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to
  • Define the sources of energy

  • Describe various emotions and how to best use them
